Dr Ng Chiew Sum is the Founder and Principal Scientist of JPS Partners – a consulting company specialising in rubber, latex, and chemical research and technologies. He holds a BSc. Polymer Science (London), MBA (INSEAD), and PhD in Management Science (UPM).
Dr Ng has over 40 years experience in chemical industries beginning at the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM) followed by roles with Fung Keong Rubber Manufactory, Lion Rubber Works, Kossan Rubber Industries, and Cabot Corporation.
Dr Ng’s patented work in latex preservation using a synergistic mixture of TMTD and zinc oxide has been widely adopted by latex industry for many years. At Cabot Corporation, Dr Ng was part of the research team that developed a patented method of mechanically combining carbon black and latex to form natural rubber elastomeric composite adopted by Michelin. Most recently his consulting work with Omya Malaysia on the reinforcement of latex gloves with calcium carbonate has also been awarded a worldwide patent.
Dr Ng is most interested in the research of novel materials, analytical methods and new technologies in rubber product and glove production. He has published work on analytical technique (modularised ThermoGravimetric Analysis, Higher Fatty Acid in Natural Rubber Latex), statistical design of experiments (Design of Experiments in Malaysian glove industry), and reaction kinetics (Arrhenius Equation and its Application to Vulcanisation Time Determination).
In between his roles in industry, Dr Ng has also spent several years as a Senior Lecturer with Taylor’s University, Sunway University and UNITAR International University. In addition, he is currently a Scientific Advisor to a spectroscopy startup IDIR Solutions advising on polymer applications.
